Investing in Vintage

This is the world’s most expensive vintage ski poster. In 2008, it sold for a whopping £36,500 in Christie’s annual vintage ski poster sale. (And no, I don’t know what it says either…)  Three years on and the price for this 1950′s Russian ski tournament poster had dropped to a mere £1,625 at the same sale. Such are the vagaries of the vintage market that today, on the Vintage Seekers site,  you would have to pay £8,800.   However, not all prices on this vintage collectibles site are into four figures. A more modest £220 buys you Colorado. This is skier Jeremy Muth, [...]

All Aboard the SnowTrain!

Having recently enjoyed a few excursions on the mostly excellent Italian rail system, it made me envious of our European neighbours who can simply jump on a train and be on the sunny slopes of the Alps within a few hours. How much more civilsed and relaxing than the long airport queues and cattle-prodding attitude of most airlines today?  However, when the resorts in Scotland are blessed and dressed deeply, us Brits can grab our PJs and jump on Scotrail’s Caledonian Sleeper service to the Highlands.  And, of [...]

The Adorable Snow Women

Be never too busy to be beautiful!  When women discovered the fun and sense of freedom that the mountains offered, magazines were quick to reflect this with witty, beautifully illustrated magazine covers.  Italy’s National Museum of the Mountains has gathered a large collection of these covers, dated from 1880 to 1940, and curated them into a stunning exhibition ‘Le Innamorevoli Donne delle Nevi’ or ’The Adorable Snow-Women’.      The 1932 ’Liberty’ magazine cover used for the exhibition poster is well chosen - our chic heroine casually powders her nose, somewhat oblivious to the straining biceps & triceps of her [...]

The High Life

Cafe au Lait, hot chocolate & brandy or a sweet, spicy vin chaud – slope side cafes offer pleasant refuelling and a welcome respite from the weather. They are also one of the very best places to indulge in a spot of covert people-watching from behind your Category 4 sunglasses. Helpfully, your fellow snow fans provide a constant stream of startling skiwear and entertaining eavesdropping. And with the sun high in the sky, something fortifying at your elbow and [...]

Style on the Slopes

With their ski tails about to collide and an untidy somersault in the offing, they’re about to lose their cool composure and carefully coiffed crowning glories. But while she will still look super chic with a dressing of  light snow on her tweedy two piece, his sunny sweater is going to be rather sodden.     But appearances can be deceptive. She may look as though she’s on her way to an important job interview, but this 1930s advert for British-made Gordon Lowe ski wear actually [...]
